Trump Reaffirms Commitment to Keep Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth

US President Donald Trump has declared his clear intention to maintain Pete Hegseth as his defense secretary, despite facing pressure from individuals who have contacted him to express dissatisfaction with Hegseth's leadership. Speaking to ABC News on Thursday, Trump acknowledged the existence of these calls but questioned the validity of the criticism, stating, "I get these calls, you know, about him. I don't understand why."

The president also noted the political reality of the confirmation process, observing that replacing the defense secretary would be a simpler task before the Democratic Party assumes control of the Senate in January. Once the new session begins, Democrats will hold the majority required to potentially block any new nominee. These comments follow reports from Wednesday that Trump had dismissed, where he told reporters that the defense secretary was "doing a very good job."

The Pentagon has also defended the secretary's position. Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell stated that Hegseth "will not back down or be deterred by politicians seeking to score partisan points." Parnell further emphasized that "Secretary Hegseth is 100 percent committed to leading the Department until the end of President Trump’s term in office."

The scrutiny surrounding Hegseth’s role occurs within a broader context of political tension. Earlier on Wednesday, Vice President JD Vance suggested that the war in Iran was the primary reason for Republican losses in the midterm elections. Democrats have maintained a long-standing critique of both the conflict itself and Hegseth's management of the war effort.
