Her return follows the June 14 hospitalization of her husband, Senator Mitch McConnell, an event that triggered various unfounded conspiracy theories across the internet regarding her whereabouts.
A spokesperson for Chao addressed the situation in a statement provided to The Courier Journal, clarifying that the travel was part of a long-planned initiative to support her family’s philanthropic efforts. Chao’s travel during McConnell’s hospitalization fueled unfounded conspiracy theories online. According to the representative, Chao engaged with several individuals during her visit, including the U.S. ambassador. The statement emphasized that the senator’s medical condition at the time did not necessitate her immediate return to the country.
Chao, who led the Department of Transportation during President Donald Trump’s first term and served as Labor secretary under President George W. Bush, has been married to the Kentucky senator for decades. Public scrutiny intensified after the Chinese embassy in Washington, D.C., released a photograph on June 17 showing Chao seated beside Chinese Vice President Han Zheng in Beijing, captured in front of a painting of the Great Wall.
Records indicate that Chao departed for the trip on June 12, two days prior to McConnell being hospitalized. While her staff confirmed her return, they did not disclose whether she had been in contact with the senator since arriving back home, as reported by the Louisville CBS affiliate WLKY. Amid the ongoing news cycle surrounding the senator’s health, it was also noted that his youngest daughter, Porter McConnell, deleted her social media account on X.
