European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has openly accused Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov of presenting a series of lies and false narratives concerning the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The confrontation occurred during a series of G20 ministerial meetings held in Atlanta on Friday.

Kallas stated that international representatives were addressing the significant geopolitical crisis, which includes the situation in Ukraine, and were able to engage Sergey Lavrov directly on these matters. According to the EU official, the Russian minister utilized the platform to put forward numerous false claims that European representatives actively challenged during the proceedings.

The diplomatic tension extended beyond verbal exchanges. A diplomatic source confirmed that European officials leveraged the G20 forum to increase pressure on Moscow, specifically aiming to secure a ceasefire in the Black Sea region. This initiative was met with pushback from Lavrov.

British Foreign Minister Ed Miliband also addressed the Russian minister during the plenary session. Miliband stated that he urged Lavrov to have the courage to inform Vladimir Putin that Russia would not emerge victorious in the war. Furthermore, the UK minister confronted Lavrov regarding a recent attack on a railway in Dnipro that resulted in 15 deaths, emphasizing that Moscow remains the aggressor in the conflict that began with a full-scale invasion in February 2022.

In a separate press conference on Friday, Lavrov expressed that he welcomed the United States' willingness to engage in dialogue, while simultaneously criticizing what he described as an "arrogant boycott" by European nations. Lavrov characterized Washington's approach as a "good lesson for our European colleagues."

The atmosphere at the summit was marked by further friction as several officials refused to participate in a traditional "family photo" alongside Lavrov, which led US organizers to cancel the event entirely. These discussions occur just days before the US midterm elections, which will influence the congressional balance of power for the remainder of President Donald Trump's term.

Amid these meetings, the US State Department announced a $2.1 billion military aid package for Ukraine, consisting of 500 Patriot PAC-3 interceptors. While President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the "strong decision," he noted that delivery could take several years. He urged American partners to find solutions for the immediate danger facing Ukraine this winter. Zelenskyy noted on X that while the interceptors could be effective for defense this winter, deliveries might only begin in a few years.

On the sidelines of the Atlanta summit, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a meeting with Lavrov.
