DRC Ebola Death Toll Surpasses 5,000 in Record Outbreak

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is currently grappling with the deadliest Ebola outbreak in its history, with health officials confirming that the death toll has surpassed 5,000 people. According to a Saturday update from the Health Ministry, the cumulative number of confirmed cases has climbed to 10,351 since the current outbreak was first declared in mid-May.

The scale of this crisis marks it as the second-largest Ebola epidemic recorded globally, trailing only the 2014–2016 outbreak that devastated West Africa. The virus has spread across eight provinces: North Kivu, South Kivu, Ituri, Haut-Uele, Bas-Uele, Tshopo, North Ubangi, and South Ubangi.

As the humanitarian situation intensifies, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) issued a formal request on Friday for enhanced protection measures for frontline medical personnel. This call follows the deaths of two young Congolese doctors who succumbed to the virus earlier in the week while working in the North Kivu and Ituri provinces.

Health authorities have identified significant gaps in their response efforts, particularly regarding early detection and the systematic tracing of contacts. Ministry reports indicate that only about 12 percent of confirmed cases were identified among individuals previously documented as contacts. Consequently, a large proportion of fatalities are occurring directly within local communities rather than in clinical settings, highlighting the urgent need for improved surveillance and intervention strategies.
