A severe wildfire in Almeria, located in southern Spain, has resulted in the deaths of 12 people. The tragedy occurred as much of the country continues to endure soaring temperatures. According to local reports, several of the victims were discovered inside vehicles that had been destroyed by the flames during the Los Gallardos fire.
Approximately 150 firefighters are currently working to bring the blaze under control. While the fire is officially recognized as the deadliest the region has experienced to date, authorities have not yet determined the specific cause of the incident. Juan Manuel Moreno, the regional leader of Andalusia, expressed his deep sorrow regarding the event, stating on X that their hearts are heavy and they are devastated by grief.
In response to the escalating situation, Spain’s military emergency unit, which is typically deployed for major crises, is expected to join the firefighting efforts in the coming hours.
Some 150 firefighters were battling the blaze.
