Final histological examinations and molecular biology analyses performed on tissue removed during Pope Leo XIV’s recent surgery have confirmed a diagnosis of localised pulmonary adenocarcinoma. The pontiff’s medical team, Dr. Luigi Carbone and Prof. Stefano Margaritora, provided the update while reporting on the Pope’s postoperative recovery.

According to the doctors, the medical evaluations confirmed that the disease had not spread beyond the lung. Based on these findings and a specialist oncological assessment, the medical team has determined that no further therapy or additional oncological treatment is necessary.

The Pope had initially disclosed his health situation during the Angelus prayer on 11 October, when he informed the faithful that he had a nodule in his right lung. Following that announcement, he was admitted to the hospital and underwent the surgical procedure on 13 October, which lasted approximately one hour and a half.
