The British government has announced that it will deploy Royal Air Force (RAF) Typhoon fighter jets to Saudi Arabia to assist in the defense of the kingdom against escalating attacks from the Houthi militia. According to the UK Defence Ministry on Tuesday, these jets are tasked with conducting defensive counter-air missions aimed at protecting Saudi cities and critical infrastructure from aerial strikes.
In addition to the fighter jets, reports indicate that Britain will provide an Atlas A400M transport aircraft along with a team of military advisers to support the mission. This deployment follows a previous announcement in September, during which Britain pledged additional military assistance to Saudi Arabia, including the provision of an RAF Voyager air-to-air refuelling aircraft, though that package did not include fighter jet support at the time.
The decision to enhance defensive measures comes amid a recent surge in Houthi militia activity. Tensions have risen significantly, underscored by reports from Yemeni authorities on Tuesday confirming that a strike on a government security forces training camp on Monday resulted in 60 deaths. This incident marks the deadliest attack since the conflict in the region began its escalation three months ago.
