Lisbon has officially been recognized as the Best City Destination in Europe at the World Travel Awards Europe 2026. In addition to this title, the Portuguese capital was honored as the Best Cruise Destination in Europe. These prestigious accolades were presented during a ceremony held on Saturday, 17 October, at the Hyatt Regency Kotor Bay Resort in Montenegro.
The event, which took place in the south-west region of the Adriatic Sea—a location classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site—marked the first time the Balkan nation has hosted the awards in the organization's 33-year history. The World Travel Awards are widely regarded as some of the most significant international distinctions within the tourism sector, annually recognizing top-tier destinations, airlines, hotels, and various other industry participants.
António Valle, director-general of the Lisbon Tourism Association, noted that these awards highlight the unique and authentic nature of the destination. According to Valle, the prizes serve to bolster the local economy while reaffirming the identity that distinguishes the capital. He stated that Lisbon is increasingly setting trends in the international tourism sector, creating tangible value for visitors as well as for those who live and work in the city.
Looking forward, the strategic focus for the city remains on attracting visitors who choose to stay longer. By encouraging tourists to explore different parts of the region, the strategy aims to generate greater social and economic value for the area, as outlined in the official note sent to newsrooms.
