At least five people have been killed and 16 others wounded following a ballistic missile attack on the Al-Maashiq Presidential Palace in the Yemeni interim capital of Aden. A government source confirmed to Anadolu Agency on Thursday that the assault involved five ballistic missiles, noting that several members of the government were inside the palace at the time of the strike.
Yemeni Health Minister Qassem Buhaibeh announced the casualty figures on Facebook, specifying that the victims were guards and civilian employees working at the presidential complex. He characterized the attack as a repeat of the incident at Aden airport in December 2020, adding that the government remains committed to performing its duties among the public. The Information Ministry confirmed that Prime Minister Shaya al-Zindani and other government members were safe following the attack.
Social media users shared video clips depicting smoke rising from the palace grounds. Beyond the strike on the presidential complex, the government-run Saba news agency reported that the Houthis also targeted residential neighborhoods in the city of Marib with ballistic missiles. The agency further noted that the group had shelled civilian homes in the vicinity of the palace. The Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV cited an unnamed military source who confirmed the palace was targeted, though the channel provided no further details.
This incident represents the first attack of its kind on the palace since fighting between the Houthi militia and the internationally recognized government resumed in July. Yemen has been embroiled in conflict since 2014, when the Houthi militia seized the national capital, Sanaa, forcing the government to relocate. A Saudi-led coalition began military intervention in 2015, and the current escalation follows the collapse of a 2022 truce.
