A devastating roof collapse at a private school in Peshawar, Pakistan, has left at least 29 people dead and more than 50 others injured. The incident occurred on Thursday, October 15, 2026, in the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. According to hospital spokesman Mohammad Asim, the fatalities included 28 children and one female teacher, with six of the deceased children identified as girls. All of the children affected by the tragedy were aged 13 or younger.
Emergency services, led by spokesman Bilal Faizi, initiated a search and rescue operation to locate students trapped beneath the debris of the three-story building. By later that day, officials confirmed that all individuals trapped under the rubble had been recovered, and cleanup operations were underway. Medical staff at the state-run Lady Reading Hospital declared an emergency to treat the influx of wounded, some of whom remain in critical condition.
Mahwish Zaman, an injured teacher who was in her classroom when the structure gave way, described the harrowing experience, stating that it felt as if the sky had fallen before she lost consciousness. The school reportedly served an estimated 1,200 students, ranging from nursery through fifth grade. Local residents were among the first to respond to the scene, assisting with rescue efforts before official teams arrived.
Samiullah Khan, a local resident, recounted rushing to the site to help, noting that his own son survived only because he had briefly left his classroom to get water. Outside the school and at the hospital, parents gathered in anguish, waiting for news about their children. In response to the disaster, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi expressed his condolences and ordered a formal report on the cause of the collapse, while directing authorities to ensure the injured receive the best possible medical care.
Peshawar police chief Saeed Ahmed confirmed that the owner of the school has been arrested, citing the building's structural weakness as a primary concern. The provincial government has formed a committee to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the incident. Provincial spokeswoman Samar Haroon Bilour commended the swift response of rescue workers and confirmed that the government is utilizing all available resources to manage the aftermath.
In Islamabad, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued separate statements expressing their sorrow. President Zardari emphasized that the entire nation shares the grief of the families and called for a thorough investigation, stressing the urgent need to ensure that school buildings adhere to national safety standards to prevent future tragedies. Building collapses remain a frequent occurrence in Pakistan, often attributed to poor enforcement of construction standards, the use of substandard materials, and the frequent disregard for safety regulations to cut costs. This incident follows a similar tragedy in July, when a roof collapse at a construction site for a tutoring center in Lahore resulted in the deaths of four schoolchildren.
