Germany announced on Saturday that it intends to move forward with plans for new European Union sanctions against Russia. This commitment comes despite a recent agreement between Moscow and Washington that will see Russia release 300,000 tons of diesel fuel to the American and global marketplace to help alleviate a fuel shortage.
Government spokesman Stefan Kornelius stated that the German government remains committed to its existing measures against Russia and is actively collaborating with European partners to develop further sanctions. In a statement provided to AFP, Kornelius emphasized that Germany’s support for Ukraine remains steadfast as it continues to defend itself against the invasion that began in 2022.
Regarding the ongoing conflict, the spokesman added that diplomatic efforts aimed at reaching a peaceful solution are still ongoing. The Kremlin confirmed the diesel arrangement, noting that Russia has reaffirmed its readiness to supply oil and oil products to both the American and international markets. This follows comments from US President Donald Trump, who shared on social media Friday that the deal was reached after discussions with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
