Downing Street Says Manchester City Not Above The Rules

Downing Street declared on Thursday that Manchester City is not "above the rules," addressing recent criticism directed at Prime Minister Andy Burnham regarding his remarks on the club's ongoing legal case. A spokesperson for No 10 emphasized that the initial judgment against the club is serious and that there should be no suggestion of preferential treatment for anyone.

The controversy stems from comments made by the Prime Minister, the former mayor of Greater Manchester and a known Everton supporter, during an interview with the BBC on Wednesday. Burnham expressed concern about the potential departure of the club's Emirati owners, highlighting the significant investment the Abu Dhabi United Group has contributed to the city of Manchester.

Manchester City, the current 10-time English champions, continues to deny any wrongdoing. The club currently faces an uncertain future after being found guilty of more than 100 breaches of financial regulations. In its statement, Downing Street insisted that the "ongoing independent process" involving the club must be "allowed to run its course and the outcome respected." The spokesperson further added that wherever wrongdoing is established, those responsible must face the appropriate consequences.
