The move comes as the former president intensifies his trade conflict with the United States' northern neighbor.
Potash, a potassium-rich salt, is a vital agricultural commodity primarily used in fertilizer to enhance crop growth and overall yields. Currently, American farmers rely on Canada as their primary supplier for the material.
The proposal faces significant international complications, as the European Union has already implemented a ban on the import of Belarusian potash. Furthermore, the EU has frozen the assets of Belaruskali, the state-owned producer responsible for the nation's output. Belarus is recognized as one of the world's largest producers of the mineral.
Beyond the economic and trade implications, Belarus maintains a close political and military alliance with Russia. The country served as a staging ground for the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine and has more recently authorized joint nuclear drills with Moscow.
