Reform UK has secured a £36m donation from British cryptocurrency billionaire Ben Delo, setting a new record for the largest single financial contribution ever made to a political party in the UK. Party leader Nigel Farage expressed that he was "honoured and humbled" by the significant gift.
Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Mr. Delo, who was born in Sheffield, explained that he decided to provide the funding because he is seeking a "fair fight and a level playing field." He criticized those who he claims express "mock concern" for the health of democracy while acting to maintain it as a "cartel." Addressing the party's recent challenges, he stated his belief that Reform UK should focus less on fundraising and more on preparing for government.
The donation is notably substantial given the current lack of restrictions on the amount of money UK-based donors can contribute to political parties. While Labour has previously implemented a £100,000 cap on donations from British citizens living abroad, no such limit currently applies to domestic donors. Mr. Delo, who has already contributed £4m to Reform, has indicated he intends to relocate to the UK from Hong Kong to continue his support for the party.
The donor's background includes a notable legal development from last year, when he received an unconditional pardon from US President Donald Trump regarding a violation of the Bank Secrecy Act.
