A stabbing incident at a high school in Croatia's capital city of Zagreb on Friday left a student and a school janitor wounded, officials confirmed. The suspected attacker, who is also a student at the school, has been detained by police.
According to Croatia's Ministry of Education, the assailant carried out the attack using a "sharp object." The student who was targeted underwent surgery for multiple stab wounds but is currently out of danger. Meanwhile, the school janitor sustained injuries to the face during the incident.
Local news portal Index reported that the violent encounter was sparked by a dispute between the two students on Thursday. Video footage from the scene showed police cordoning off the school building as investigators began their work.
This stabbing follows a previous tragedy in December 2024, when a former student armed with a knife entered a Zagreb school, killing a 7-year-old girl and injuring a teacher and three other children. That attacker was subsequently convicted and sentenced to 50 years in prison. Following that deadly incident, schools in Zagreb and other regions of Croatia began employing security guards to restrict unauthorized entry.
