The United Kingdom has announced a new commitment of £100 million, equivalent to approximately $135 million, aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s air defence capabilities ahead of the coming winter. According to a statement from the British defence ministry, this package includes the provision of Patriot missiles, alongside air defence interceptors, drones, and large-calibre artillery rounds.
The equipment is slated for delivery before the onset of winter to assist Ukraine in protecting its armed forces, critical national infrastructure, and civilians from Russian strikes. This contribution is part of a broader NATO programme designed to support Kiev. Ukraine has remained heavily dependent on advanced systems, particularly US-made Patriot interceptors, to defend its airspace against ballistic missile attacks. However, the country has faced a reported shortage of these interceptors since the United States and Israel entered into conflicts with Iran in February, which diverted global supplies.
Britain has maintained its position as one of Ukraine's primary international backers since the conflict began in February 2022. Recent diplomatic and military efforts include Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s visit to Kiev last month, his first foreign trip since taking office in late July. Additionally, the UK recently agreed to share information regarding components for the SCALP long-range missile—the French-produced version of the British Storm Shadow—to enable local assembly lines within Ukraine.
On Tuesday, the newly appointed UK defence minister, Wes Streeting, is set to co-chair his first meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group, an alliance of 50 nations providing military assistance to Kiev. Reflecting on the importance of the aid, Streeting stated, "Both the Prime Minister and I heard loud and clear on our first visits to Kiev the importance of supporting Ukraine through this winter, as Putin prepares to use winter as a weapon by continuing barbaric attacks against civilian and energy targets."
