A Greek air force jet crashed on Saturday during an aerial show held at the Tanagra air force base, located approximately 60 kilometers, or about 40 miles, north of Athens. The incident involved a twin-seat Phantom F4 aircraft that went down while performing a low-altitude maneuver in front of several thousand spectators.
The crash ignited a fire on the base grounds, sending large plumes of black smoke into the air. Emergency response efforts were initially hampered by the blaze, according to air force officials. No immediate information was provided by the military regarding the status of the two airmen on board the aircraft.
A significant firefighting operation was launched to contain the flames, which remained at a distance from the designated viewing area of the annual Athens Flying Week event. A total of 85 firefighters were deployed to the scene, supported by 11 water-dropping planes and helicopters. Authorities confirmed that there were no injuries among the attendees at the air show following the crash.
