A severe El Niño event is currently developing, with projections suggesting it could be the largest of its kind in at least 1,000 years. This phenomenon is expected to inject significant additional heat into an atmosphere already warming rapidly due to fossil fuel-driven climate change, with experts warning that 2027 is poised to become the hottest year on record. The event has been described by observers as a "Godzilla-level" occurrence and "truly mind-blowing" in its potential scale.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres described the event as being "supersized before our eyes," stating that the planet is entering "uncharted waters" and a "danger zone of extreme weather." The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has launched an unprecedented mobilization of national meteorological and hydrological services to assist communities on the front lines of this climate threat. WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo noted that the organization has never launched such a major mobilization in its 50-year history, emphasizing that there is no time to lose as the world faces potential devastation from droughts and floods.
The impact of this El Niño is already manifesting globally. Recent data from Monday indicated that ocean temperatures at the heart of the event were 2.6C above the 30-year average, nearing the record anomaly of 3.1C set in 2015. Climate analyst Zeke Hausfather noted that, based on historical data from tree rings, corals, and documents, no El Niño has reached these levels in the last millennium. Forecasts from 14 different models suggest the temperature anomaly could peak at approximately 4C in November. In some specific areas, subsurface ocean temperatures were an extraordinary 8C above average during July and early August.
The consequences are expected to be widespread and severe. In August, the World Food Programme warned that the event could push roughly 50 million people toward acute hunger. Regional impacts are already visible, including worsening wildfires in Indonesia, the weakening of essential monsoon rains in India, and increased fire risks in Australia alongside intense flooding in South America. The climate crisis, which caused at least 35,000 deaths during Europe's most extreme heatwave this summer, is now being further intensified by these natural cycles.
Chris Jaccarini of the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit in the UK highlighted the economic toll, noting that extreme weather has driven up food prices and severely impacted agriculture. British farmers, for instance, are facing their worst harvest on record in 2026 following repeated droughts and heatwaves. Jaccarini warned that without rapid emission cuts, climate change will continue to worsen, with El Niño events acting as a mechanism to turbocharge these trends every few years.
