President Donald Trump has signaled a forthcoming military response to Iran, following a series of retaliatory ballistic-missile strikes that targeted two U.S. bases in Jordan. The strikes, which were intercepted, occurred overnight as hostilities between the two nations intensified following a brief period of calm.
In a phone conversation with reporter Trey Yingst on August 31, the president stated clearly that the U.S. intends to strike back. "We're going to hit them hard," Trump said. "There will be a response."
These recent attacks follow a U.S. military operation on August 30 that targeted two Iranian launchers on Larak Island. According to Tim Hawkins, a spokesperson for U.S. Central Command, that strike was initiated after American forces observed the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) preparing to deploy rockets equipped with sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian state media reported that two individuals were killed and others injured during the engagement on Larak Island. No injuries were reported at the American bases in Jordan following the interception of the missiles.
The conflict, which marked its six-month milestone on August 28, has seen the administration pivot between military and economic strategies. On the morning of August 31, President Trump utilized Truth Social to label Iran a "Failed Nation," criticizing its leadership, economic state, and military capabilities. While emphasizing the potential for military action, the president also highlighted the role of economic pressure, noting that the administration recently initiated "Operation Economic Outcast" to impose new sanctions on countries supporting Iran.
Tensions were further punctuated by a social media post from the president featuring an AI-generated video showing an attack on Kharg Island, a major Iranian oil export hub. There is no evidence such an event occurred, and an Iranian official dismissed the video as "laughable" in comments to Reuters.
"IT IS DEAD! They have no Navy, they have no Air Force, they have no currency, they are not paying their soldiers or police, Inflation is at 300%, and their leadership is in total disarray and incapable of properly representing the country," Trump wrote.
