A long-awaited initiative to streamline public transport services between Austria’s Salzburg and the neighbouring Berchtesgadener Land district in Bavaria has secured a significant financial boost. The project has been awarded approximately €750,000 in funding from the European Regional Development Fund, a move designed to facilitate smoother travel for the many people who commute across the border for work, family ties, or leisure.
The joint grant was awarded this week to the Berchtesgadener Land district and the Salzburger Verkehrsverbund (SVG). The primary objectives of the funding are to introduce standardised fare systems, establish better transport connections, and provide improved passenger information across these international transit links.
Local officials have welcomed the investment as a pivotal step forward. Berchtesgadener Land District Administrator Michael Koller described the funding as a strong signal, noting that with the support of the European Union and close cooperation with the SVG, the region is moving significantly closer to creating a unified transport network. Salzburg’s Deputy Governor Stefan Schnöll echoed this sentiment, stating that the project will make everyday life easier for passengers. Johannes Gfrerer, Managing Director of the SVG, added that integrating the Berchtesgadener Land district into the Salzburg Transport Association will bring the two regions closer together, creating clear mutual benefits for both areas.
The initiative has also received support from the Bavarian state government. Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter confirmed that the state had previously contributed €550,000 to the district for this project, emphasising that establishing comprehensive network structures is essential for strengthening public transport.
Despite the secured funding, the project has encountered delays. While the upgrades were originally scheduled for launch early next year, officials on both sides of the border stated that organisational and technical difficulties have pushed the timeline back. The implementation is now expected in the fourth quarter, meaning the improved service will not be operational until at least October 2027.
