A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck Colombia on Wednesday, causing widespread shaking across the center and northeast of the country, including the capital city of Bogotá. The seismic event occurred at approximately 11:45 am local time, with its epicenter located in Los Santos, situated within the Santander department.
Initial reports from authorities had measured the tremor at a magnitude of 5.4 at a depth of 140 kilometres. However, revised figures provided by the Colombian Geological Survey (SGC) later adjusted the magnitude to 5.1 and placed the depth at 149 kilometres.
The effects of the quake were felt throughout the region, with tremors reported in Bucaramanga, Piedecuesta, and Floridablanca, as well as in the capital. In response to the shaking, alarms were triggered in Bogotá, leading to the evacuation of several buildings. Preventive evacuations were also ordered for residents in Bucaramanga.
This latest tremor follows a significant 7.4-magnitude earthquake that hit the nation just 16 days prior, an event that resulted in more than 300 deaths. Despite the recent activity, authorities have reported no casualties or structural damage resulting from Wednesday's earthquake.
