The Danish Ministry of Social Affairs announced on Monday that the government will provide compensation to 13 individuals who were victims of abuse while living at the Solgarden care home. The victims, whose identities remain undisclosed, are set to receive a payout of 300,000 Kroner each.
The decision follows a formal complaint filed by the 13 former residents in March, detailing the abuse they endured during their time at the facility. According to the ministry, internal files and personal accounts confirm that "serious and systemic failings" occurred at the home between 1949 and 1976, a period during which the facility operated under state supervision. The government explicitly acknowledged that "extensive and systematic failures occurred" and that the state had neglected its supervisory duty.
The abuse reported at the facility included sexual assault. In 2024, one former resident, Tove Dohn Lauridsen, shared her account with public radio, stating that she and her sister had been systematically raped by the head of the home when she was eight years old. The Lutheran Mission, which operated Solgarden, issued an apology to all former residents in 2024.
