US President Donald Trump has renewed his criticism of Canada, targeting the nation's trade policies and its relationship with Washington in a recent statement. Writing on Truth Social, Trump claimed that "Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!!" He further accused Ottawa of imposing high tariffs on American agricultural products, asserting that US farmers have faced "massive amounts of Tariffs" for years.
These comments arrive during an ongoing trade dispute between the two nations. Earlier, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney accused the United States of using new tariffs to "hurt and divide" Canada, describing the American measures as a "miscalculation." In response to the situation, Carney announced that Canada has suspended trade talks with Washington after the US made demands that Ottawa could not accept. He also pledged that Canada would begin dollar-for-dollar retaliation starting on September 8.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer offered a different account of the breakdown, stating that Canada had walked away from a nearly completed agreement. According to Greer, the deal would have further reduced tariffs on Canadian exports to the US market. The current impasse follows Canada’s decision to suspend trade negotiations over what officials in Ottawa described as unacceptable changes to the terms proposed by Washington.
