Authorities in South Carolina are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of actress and activist Hayden Panettiere, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 36. Officers from the Greenville Police Department responded to a report of an unresponsive female shortly before 2 p.m. local time (8 p.m. CEST). Although life-saving measures were performed, Panettiere was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police reported that there were no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances surrounding her passing. While an official cause of death has not yet been announced, there is widespread speculation among US media outlets that she may have suffered an overdose. People Magazine reported that responding emergency officers were heard discussing an "overdose" and "cardiac arrest," citing dispatch audio obtained from emergency services.

Her family confirmed her death in a statement released through her publicist, asking for privacy as they "process this unimaginable loss."

Born in Palisades, New York, in 1989, Panettiere began appearing in commercials before her first birthday. She grew up as a successful child actor, earning roles in the daytime soap operas One Life to Live and Guiding Light. In 2000, she starred alongside Denzel Washington in the film Remember the Titans, having previously voiced the character Dot in the Pixar animated film A Bug's Life.

Her major breakthrough came in 2006 when she was cast as the cheerleader Claire Bennet, a character with regenerative powers, in the NBC science-fiction drama Heroes. The role propelled Panettiere to international stardom. She later played the ambitious country singer Juliette Barnes opposite Connie Britton in the series Nashville from 2012 to 2018, a performance that earned her two Golden Globe nominations.

In her personal life, Panettiere began a relationship with Ukrainian former world heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko in 2009. The couple became engaged in 2013 and had a daughter, Kaya, the following year, before separating in 2018.

Away from her acting career, Panettiere spoke openly about her struggles with addiction and postpartum depression. In May 2026, she published her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, in which she reflected on her career and personal journey. Hayden Panettiere is survived by her daughter, Kaya, and her parents.
