Ukraine conducted one of the most significant aerial offensives of the ongoing conflict on Sunday, deploying hundreds of drones across Russian territory. The operation resulted in at least six fatalities, marking a notable escalation in Kyiv’s strategy to bring the impact of the war directly to the Russian public. Throughout this year, Ukraine has increasingly utilized long-range missiles and drone swarms to strike energy facilities, military industries, and commercial infrastructure, including large-scale retail depots belonging to the Russian firm Wildberries, which has resulted in the destruction of billions of dollars’ worth of merchandise.
Russia’s Ministry of Defense reported that its forces intercepted 822 Ukrainian drones overnight. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that approximately 600 of these drones were directed toward the Russian capital, with one-third of that number destroyed over the Moscow region itself. Among the casualties, an 83-year-old man was killed when a drone struck a private residence in the Moscow region, according to local Governor Andrey Vorobyov. Vorobyov also confirmed that a Ukrainian strike ignited a fire at a Wildberries warehouse located in the town of Podolsk.
In the southwestern Rostov region, Governor Yury Slyusar reported that a massive attack involving more than 150 drones targeted three towns, resulting in five deaths. The strikes caused damage to several homes and a railway station, while also triggering a forest fire in the area. These events occurred alongside simultaneous Russian strikes on Ukraine, which resulted in further casualties and significant infrastructure damage.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that a Russian missile attack in Kryvyi Rih claimed two lives and left 14 others wounded. ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, the nation’s largest steel producer, confirmed that one of its sites was struck, forcing a partial suspension of operations. Additionally, President Zelenskyy noted that one more person had been killed in the city of Sumy. In the southern Zaporizhzhia region, Ivan Fedorov, the head of the local military administration, stated that a man and a woman were killed when their home was hit by a Russian strike.
In Kyiv, Russian attacks sparked several fires, wounding six people and destroying a landmark book market near the Pochaina metro station. Firefighters worked to extinguish flames that sent plumes of black smoke across the capital as they navigated the ruins of the market’s pavilions. President Zelenskyy condemned the strikes, stating that wherever the Russians can reach with their ballistic missiles, they strike civilian infrastructure. Russia’s Ministry of Defense claimed its targets included a metallurgical plant in Kryvyi Rih and several military-industrial sites in Kyiv, including a manufacturing facility for Ukraine’s Flamingo missiles. These domestically produced missiles are increasingly key to Ukraine’s long-range attacks, with Zelenskyy announcing Saturday that Kyiv had used the weapons to attack a rocket research and production center in Samara, approximately 900 kilometers (560 miles) from the Ukrainian border.
International airspace was also affected by the aerial conflict. Romania’s Ministry of National Defense reported that a Spanish Air and Space Force F-18 fighter jet successfully intercepted and shot down a drone that entered Romanian airspace early Sunday morning. The drone’s entry was detected by surveillance systems at 4:44 a.m., about 24 kilometers (14.9 miles) north of the eastern city of Galati near the border with Moldova. The Spanish F-18, performing air policing duties, received engagement approval and shot down the drone at 05:01. Later, Romanian officials reported finding drone debris in the Black Sea around 10 a.m., about 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) from the coastal city of Constanta, with another fragment found 1 nautical mile (1.85 kilometers) from the city. While Romanian officials did not specify the origin, Moldova’s Ministry of Defense confirmed its surveillance systems detected a Geran-type Shahed drone in its airspace, which entered from Ukraine and exited toward Romania.
The incident follows weeks of similar activity, as Romanian pilots have shot down three drones over three days amid intensified Russian attacks near the border. Acting Foreign Minister Oana Toiu noted on X that the Spanish deployment in Romania was scaled up at the request of Romania and NATO to bolster the Eastern Flank, marking Spain’s fourth such deployment since the start of the full-scale invasion.
