Declan Rice Hits Himself With Community Shield During Arsenal Celebration

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice experienced an awkward and painful moment while joining his teammates in celebrating their Community Shield victory over Manchester City. During the festivities at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Rice attempted to hoist the trophy in front of the supporters, but the stand of the shield accidentally swung back and struck him in the face. The midfielder quickly laughed off the mishap before turning his attention away from the crowd.

The incident occurred following Arsenal’s 3-0 defeat of Manchester City in the 2026/27 season curtain-raiser. Rice, who played a significant role in the Gunners' Premier League campaign last year, entered the match as a second-half substitute. Arsenal held a 2-0 lead at the time of his arrival, and the team added a third goal just two minutes later. Captain Martin Odegaard initially led the squad in celebrating with the trophy before it was passed among the players.

This victory marked the second time in his career that Rice has won the Community Shield, having previously secured the title against the same opponent in 2023, when Arsenal won 4-1 on penalties following a 1-1 draw. Reflecting on his player's workload, head coach Mikel Arteta addressed questions regarding whether Rice could maintain the same volume of appearances this season. Arteta noted that the midfielder has consistently played high numbers of matches over the past few years, adding that while he hopes to focus on performance quality, the player himself likely desires to play as many as 70 games this year.

Arteta expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance against Enzo Maresca’s side, noting the squad's dominant display and their clear desire to start the season on a high note. The result brings Arsenal’s total Community Shield triumphs to 18, trailing only Manchester United, who hold 21 titles. The Gunners are now set to shift their focus to the start of the 2026/27 Premier League season, where they will face newly promoted side Coventry this Friday.

“Hopefully he doesn't need to do it that consistently and focus more on the quality and the performance than the volume but probably he will say the opposite.

Only Manchester United (21) have won the silverware more times than the North London side.
