Moroccan security authorities have detained hundreds of migrants who were attempting to reach the Spanish exclave of Ceuta by both land and sea. According to reports from Moroccan state broadcaster Medi 1 TV on Sunday, 294 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa were taken into custody on Saturday.

In addition to the migrants, officials arrested 61 Moroccan nationals on allegations of facilitating the attempted crossings. The surge in activity followed a series of social media calls encouraging migrants to attempt the journey to the Spanish city, which sits on Morocco’s northern coast. In anticipation of these efforts, both Spanish and Moroccan authorities significantly increased security measures and restricted movement toward the border area.

A senior Moroccan diplomat, speaking on the condition of anonymity, noted that the border with Ceuta is under constant surveillance. More than 20,000 Moroccan security personnel are deployed to the area daily, an operation that incurs costs amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars.

Every year, thousands of individuals from across Africa and other regions travel to Morocco in hopes of finding a route into Europe. Many are fleeing poverty, conflict, and instability, viewing enclaves like Ceuta and Melilla as gateways to reaching mainland Spain and pursuing better economic prospects.
