A tragic maritime accident occurred off the coast of Vietnam’s southern island of Phu Quoc, resulting in the deaths of at least 15 Indian tourists. According to reports from the Vietnamese website VnExpress, the vessel was carrying 36 individuals when it overturned approximately 400 meters from the coast of May Rut Ngoai islet.
In the aftermath of the capsizing, a coordinated rescue operation involving multiple tourist vessels and the coast guard was launched. Twenty-one people were rescued, and all the dead were recovered, authorities said.
The Indian Embassy in Vietnam officially released the names of all 32 Indian nationals who were on board the vessel. In a statement posted on X on Saturday, the embassy expressed its condolences and confirmed that it had established control rooms at the Consulate General of India in Ho Chi Minh City and the Embassy in Hanoi to provide necessary information and assistance to those affected.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged the incident, noting that the tourists were visiting Vietnam to participate in an annual meeting for a private mobile phone company. Many of the passengers were employees and distributors associated with Lava Mobile, primarily from the state of Andhra Pradesh. The Prime Minister added that personnel from the Indian Embassy were present at the scene to oversee the situation.
