This development arrives as public concern remains high regarding pump prices ahead of the upcoming midterm elections in November. While the $3.47 price point is intended to provide relief, it remains only slightly lower than the national average, which was recorded at $3.79 on the same Tuesday, according to data from AAA.
Earlier in 2026, gasoline prices experienced a significant climb across all 50 states, with the national average reaching nearly $5 per gallon in May. Industry analyst GasBuddy reported sharp spikes in states such as Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois during that period. These fluctuations were largely attributed to the rising cost of crude oil, which is traded on global markets and was impacted by the U.S.-Iran war. Data from the International Energy Agency indicates that in 2025, approximately 34% of global crude oil was transported through the Strait of Hormuz.
