The president issued a stern warning to Tehran, stating that any attempt at retaliation would result in catastrophic consequences for the nation. Trump detailed that the military action was a direct response to what he described as a failed attempt by Iran to plant sea mines in the vital waterway, as well as a recent missile barrage launched against an American base in Jordan, where eight incoming missiles were successfully intercepted and neutralized.
Addressing the potential for further escalation, Trump warned that if Iran chooses to retaliate for this justified attack, they will face a much harder and higher level of force. He added that a larger, significant assault is currently waiting in the wings that would leave very little of Iran remaining. In comments provided to Fox News, the president explained that the US military specifically targeted radar sites that Iran had attempted to rebuild. He noted that US forces waited until the construction was nearly complete before launching the strike to ensure the targets were hit effectively.
Trump dismissed the prospect of diplomatic talks, asserting that the US currently holds a superior position with near-total control of the Strait of Hormuz and observed that the Iranian economy is in a state of collapse. According to US officials, the military operation involved approximately 100 targets, including Revolutionary Guard air defenses, radar systems, anti-ship missile sites, and assets used for mine-laying. Additionally, US drones targeted two Iranian government tankers by firing missiles into their engine rooms while the vessels were anchored off the Iranian coast, a move described as part of a new tanker-for-tanker policy.
The strikes are reportedly part of a broader strategic effort to prevent Tehran from rebuilding capabilities used to disrupt commercial shipping, with one official noting that the operation has effectively reduced threat levels for at least a month. Iran had previously launched roughly 25 ballistic missiles and a wave of two dozen drones against US bases located in Jordan, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Erbil, Iraq. While the majority of these projectiles were intercepted by US forces, the recent American response marks a significant escalation in the ongoing regional tensions.
