The United Kingdom has officially withdrawn its remaining diplomatic staff from Iran, citing the deteriorating security situation as tensions between Tehran and the United States continue to climb. The Foreign Office confirmed on Thursday that while the British embassy in the country will continue to operate remotely, all physical staff have been temporarily pulled out.
This move follows a previous reduction of embassy personnel in June, which saw Britain align its diplomatic posture with other European nations, as well as Australia and New Zealand. Those earlier withdrawals were prompted by renewed Israeli air strikes against Iran, conducted under the claim that Tehran was nearing the development of a nuclear weapon. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has declined to disclose the exact number of staff involved in this latest withdrawal, consistent with its approach during a similar reduction in February.
The British government maintains a firm stance regarding travel to the region, with the FCDO website currently advising against all travel to Iran. The advisory warns that any British nationals already present in the country, whether as residents or visitors, should carefully evaluate their safety and the risks associated with remaining there.
The heightened security environment coincides with the ongoing detention of British couple Craig and Lindsay Foreman. The pair was arrested at the beginning of 2025 while on a motorcycle trip around the world. They are currently serving 10-year sentences on spying charges, both of which they deny. According to their family, Craig Foreman was recently handed an additional two-year sentence for speaking with the media.
