Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz has characterized the newly signed Mecca Joint Defence Agreement as a “historic step” aimed at bolstering regional security architecture. The agreement was finalized on Friday in Mecca by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
In a statement released via the Turkish social media platform NSosyal, Yilmaz emphasized that the pact is designed to reinforce collective security, deterrence, defence industry cooperation, and regional stability. He further noted that the initiative aligns with Türkiye's broader peace-oriented foreign policy and its commitment to multidimensional strategic partnerships. Yilmaz explicitly clarified that the agreement is “not directed against any country.”
Beyond the security sector, Yilmaz expressed optimism that this strategic framework will catalyze economic collaboration, specifically targeting improvements in connectivity, trade, finance, and investment. He highlighted that as global institutions and established rules face increasing pressure, such regional partnerships are becoming vital. According to Yilmaz, these cooperative efforts could potentially serve as a foundation for a “fairer global order in the future.”
Building upon a foundation of shared history, brotherhood, and solidarity, the Vice President expressed his hope that the agreement will yield positive results for the region, the Islamic world, and the advancement of global peace.
