US President Donald Trump has returned to the White House Correspondents' Dinner, appearing at the rescheduled gala three months after an alleged assassination attempt forced a chaotic evacuation of the original event. The president is set to deliver a speech on Friday that he was previously prevented from giving in April, when gunshots fired at the Washington Hilton led to the immediate cancellation of the black-tie dinner. Cole Allen, a 31-year-old California man, has entered a plea of not guilty to charges related to the incident, including attempting to kill the president.
In light of the previous security breach, the US Secret Service is taking no chances. While the venue has shifted from the Hilton to the Waldorf Astoria to create a smaller, more intimate atmosphere, the security presence remains substantial. Authorities, including police and National Guard officers, established a major cordon around the area, sealing off nearby roads. Although guests passing through the perimeter faced only a cursory check, they were required to present identification and a QR code before entering the atrium. US Secret Service Director Sean Curran was observed monitoring the arrival of guests and walking through the main atrium where attendees gathered for pre-dinner drinks. There was a long line for scanners on the way into the room where the dinner is being held.
Despite facing criticism regarding the April security failure, Curran maintained that the system functioned as intended by preventing the alleged gunman from reaching the main hall. Curran, who was at the president's side when an assassin's bullet hit the Republican's ear at an election rally in 2024, noted that current threats against top US officials are "off the charts." He added that the threat picture and environment are as large as he has ever seen. Nonetheless, Curran insisted the agency was fully prepared for the rescheduled dinner.
The evening's program remains similar to the original plan, featuring a performance by mentalist Oz Pearlman. The event will also include a tribute to the staff of the Hilton and a Secret Service agent who was struck in his protective vest while helping to stop the alleged gunman in April. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the president is fulfilling his promise to "finish the job" and celebrate 250 years of American greatness and a free press. Weijia Jiang, president of the White House Correspondents Association, stated in June that the organization would not allow an act of violence to have the last word. Trump, who previously praised the decision to hold the event as a sign of strength and fortitude, noted that while he is unsure if he will deliver the same "rather nasty" remarks regarding certain individuals, the event will certainly be a "HOT" ticket.
