Visitors arriving in Greece this season are showing far greater awareness of extreme heat risks, arriving well-equipped with sun protection to counter intense ultraviolet radiation. Despite successive heatwaves and wildfires across Europe triggering widespread concern, the climate challenges have done little to deter holidaymakers from flocking to Athens.
In the heart of the Greek capital, sights are increasingly being viewed by tourists wearing sunglasses, hats, and occasionally holding umbrellas for shade. This shift in behavior is a marked change from previous years, which saw several unpleasant heat-related incidents.
Red Cross volunteers stationed in Athens have observed this positive trend firsthand. Eirini Bourovili, a volunteer with the organization, noted that she is distributing fewer hats during their heat-stress prevention campaign. The initiative provides visitors with essential kits containing water, sunscreen, and hats, but many tourists no longer need the provided headwear.
Bourovili explained that travelers are much more proactive now. "People tend to use more hats and other protective methods such as sunscreen and sunglasses compared with the past, because I think they are now better informed about ultraviolet radiation and how sunlight and sun exposure can affect the skin and skin ageing, as well as skin cancer," she said.
Even extreme weather has failed to cool Greece's tourism boom. Last summer went down as the third hottest in the nation's recorded history, yet a record-breaking 38 million tourists still visited the country.
