A suicide bomber, supported by a group of armed militants, launched an overnight attack on a security checkpoint in the Tank district of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The military confirmed on Friday that 15 security personnel were killed during the violent confrontation.
According to the military's account, the assailants attempted to storm the facility before driving an explosives-laden vehicle into the perimeter wall. The resulting blast caused severe damage to the site. Military forces successfully repelled the rest of the assault, officials stated.
The casualties included 12 military personnel, two police officers, and one government official from the forest department. In a formal statement, the military's media wing honored the victims, stating: "Fifteen brave sons of soil including twelve military, two policemen and a government official ex forest department rendered the ultimate sacrifice and embraced Shahadat (martyrdom)."
While the Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), did not immediately claim responsibility, the military has officially blamed the group for the attack. The TTP is known to operate as a separate entity while maintaining an alliance with the Taliban rulers in neighboring Afghanistan.
This incident occurs amid ongoing tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Pakistan has consistently accused the Afghan Taliban government of providing safe harbor to TTP militants, a charge that Kabul denies. These disputes have led to increased friction, with Pakistan occasionally conducting airstrikes against targets it claims are militant strongholds on Afghan territory. The country has faced a notable rise in militant violence directed at security forces in recent years, with authorities frequently identifying the TTP and its affiliates as the primary drivers of the instability.
