The latest installment in the Marvel franchise, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, has achieved a massive $927 million in worldwide ticket sales during its opening weekend. This performance marks the second-most lucrative global debut in cinema history. The film, which features Tom Holland in his fourth outing as Peter Parker, follows the protagonist as he navigates a world that has forgotten his superhero identity, while co-starring Zendaya as MJ.
Domestically, the movie earned $355 million across the United States and Canada, placing it just behind 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which holds the record with $357 million. Internationally, the film brought in $572 million, with China emerging as the top market by contributing $121 million. In Australia, the release set a record as the highest-grossing opening weekend of 2026, earning $30.4 million.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige described the debut as a truly phenomenal opening. The studio now claims the four largest global box office openings of all time: Avengers: Endgame at $1.22 billion, Spider-Man: Brand New Day at $927 million, Avengers: Infinity War at $640 million, and Spider-Man: No Way Home at $600 million.
Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Motion Picture Group, highlighted the movie’s focus on friendship and the importance of human connection. This sentiment was echoed by Greg Durkin, founder of Enact Insight, who noted that the film’s themes of loneliness and isolation resonate deeply with Gen Z audiences. Durkin suggested the movie addresses a critical need for connection amidst what he described as a mental health and friendship crisis among young people.
The success of the film has significantly bolstered the 2026 summer box office, which was already supported by releases such as Toy Story 5 and The Odyssey. Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends for Rentrak, credited the combination of these films with creating the largest domestic weekend in theater history. While year-to-date receipts are up 10% compared to last year, the overall 2026 domestic box office remains 16% below 2019 levels.
