Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated on Tuesday that Spain is beginning to see a path forward in the effort to contain the major wildfires currently burning across the country. While he noted signs of improvement, the Prime Minister warned that the coming hours remain critical and urged the public to exercise extreme caution. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has forecast a new heatwave, which is expected to bring extreme temperatures, dry air, and stable atmospheric conditions that could complicate firefighting operations and heighten the risk of new blazes.
Authorities are maintaining a state of maximum alert as they work to prevent the potential reignition of hotspots in areas including Ávila, Madrid, Toledo, and Castellón. In the Madrid region, fire crews are treating the blazes in Ávila, San Martín de Valdeiglesias, and Villa del Prado as a single, large-scale event because the fire fronts have merged, causing significant disruption to local communities. Despite the ongoing threat, the Interior Ministry announced that evacuation orders were lifted for 13 municipalities at 17:00 (15:00 GMT) on Tuesday, serving as a positive indicator of the progress made by emergency teams.
Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska, speaking to TVE on Tuesday morning, described the recent efforts as “reasonably positive.” He credited the effectiveness of night-time operations for the current gains on the ground. Looking ahead, the Minister emphasized the necessity of strengthening national wildfire prevention strategies and modernizing the aerial firefighting fleet to better handle future emergencies. Investigations into the origins of the disaster suggest that the fire began after heavy machinery was used without proper authorization in a forested area near Burgohondo. The resulting flames have since caused extensive devastation throughout the Alberche Valley, the Sierra de Gredos, the Tiétar Valley, Tierra de Pinares, and the vicinity of the El Burguillo reservoir.
