A legal case involving a 19-year-old French national, Didier Gaspard Owen Maximilien, was adjourned on Monday in Singapore. The teenager had been widely expected to enter a guilty plea regarding charges of public nuisance and mischief after recording a video of himself licking a straw from a vending machine and returning it.
Proceedings were halted by the court as prosecutors requested additional time to determine whether a conviction would result in the revocation of the teen's student pass. The court has scheduled the next appearance for July 30.
Under Singaporean law, the charge of mischief carries a potential penalty of up to two years in prison, a fine, or a combination of both. The charge of public nuisance is considered less severe, carrying a maximum sentence of three months in prison, a fine, or both.
Singapore maintains strict regulations regarding public cleanliness and behavior. The city-state enforces rigorous rules, including prohibitions on chewing gum and significant penalties for acts such as vandalism and littering.
