The family of Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old Black teenager whose body was found on a barrier island off the coast of Mississippi, is seeking honesty and transparency in the ongoing investigation into his death. At a press conference in New York City on Friday, Wells’ parents spoke about their son, with his mother, Christine Wells-Wonsley, stating, “This is not how I wanted the world to meet my son.” She described Nolan as someone who “never met a stranger” and “just wanted everyone to be in peace with one another.”
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who is representing the Wells family, has requested photos and videos to support their independent investigation. An independent autopsy ordered by Crump is still pending, with results expected soon. Meanwhile, the state of Mississippi’s autopsy results are also pending, awaiting a toxicology report, according to state officials.
Nolan Wells was reportedly the only Black friend in a group of mostly white teenagers who went on an Independence Day trip to Horn Island. Details surrounding what happened are emerging from social media, including a video that appears to show an argument on the island. One friend’s mother stated that Wells chose to stay behind when his friends departed. The circumstances of him being left behind, whether the argument involved him, and if race played a role are all points of public attention and online speculation.
During the press conference, civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton echoed calls for a thorough investigation, noting, “We’re not bringing in race, but we’re not discounting race either.” He added that the situation “smacks of some of the worst fears we’ve had historically.” Sharpton announced he would be officiating Wells’ funeral, viewing it as an opportunity to “seek justice and unity” and inviting people of all races to attend.
Financial support for the autopsy is being provided by former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, while filmmaker Tyler Perry is assisting with funeral expenses.
Wells was remembered by those who knew him as a well-loved individual. He was a wide receiver for Southwest Mississippi Community College and previously played football at Ocean Springs High School. His high school coach described him as an outstanding young man and an ideal student, teammate, and friend. Ocean Springs is a predominantly white, middle-upper class community on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, where trips to barrier islands like Horn Island are common. Ocean Springs is home to nearly 19,000 people.
Horn Island, part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore managed by the National Park Service, has no staff, drinking water, shelter, facilities, or communication. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident as a death, not a homicide, and has requested community assistance in providing photos and videos, particularly those depicting alleged altercations involving Wells on the day he went missing. The Sheriff’s Office has not yet responded to requests for comment from Mississippi Public Broadcasting, the Gulf States Newsroom, and NPR. Authorities have noted that the waters around the barrier islands can be treacherous, with depths changing rapidly. Trascher says he said calls for help around these barrier islands are not unusual: “There’s parts of [the northwest tip of Horn Island] where you could be in like three feet of water and [then] 20 feet of water, like within a few steps.”
