The death toll from a mudslide in eastern China rose to three on Sunday following days of torrential rain caused by Typhoon Saudel. According to state broadcaster CCTV, rescuers recovered two bodies on Sunday after the disaster struck a village in Suichuan County, Jiangxi province, early Saturday. The event resulted in damage to a dozen houses, and local authorities have relocated over 5,300 people to safer areas. Nine individuals remain missing in the region.
In a separate development, heavy rains associated with the typhoon also led to two deaths in Hunan province in south-central China. While the specific causes of these fatalities were not detailed, reports indicated that the downpours triggered landslides and other related disasters.
Typhoon Saudel made multiple landfalls in the region, initially hitting Zhejiang Province twice on Aug. 28. It later made a third landfall in Fujian Province on Sept. 3 as a tropical storm. Both Zhejiang and Fujian provinces are neighbors to Jiangxi.
