Madonna has shared a touching tribute to her longtime collaborator and acclaimed music producer William Orbit, following the news of his death last month at the age of 69. The producer, born William Wainwright, passed away at his home on 23 July. His family announced the loss on Friday, though no cause of death was specified.
Reflecting on their partnership, the pop superstar took to Instagram on Saturday to share her grief. She wrote, "You pressed a magic button inside of me and I fell into a galaxy of unrealised dreams. Your music gave me a magic carpet to fly on and I visited many places." The tribute included a video featuring the pair accepting a Grammy Award, alongside clips from their various music videos and creative projects.
Orbit was instrumental in the evolution of Madonna's sound, most notably in 1998 with the release of the album Ray of Light. By blending ambient techno, electronic dance music, trip-hop, and pop, the record earned three Grammy Awards and is widely regarded as one of the singer's finest achievements. Madonna noted that working with him represented a pivotal new chapter in her career, describing the studio environment as "church-like" where she would wait for his ideas to emerge from his guitar or keyboard.
She credited Orbit with inspiring her to push the boundaries of her songwriting, allowing her to express herself without worrying about whether the words "made sense or not." She added, "In many ways you were my Ray of Light – as was my daughter Lola who was born around this time."
Beyond his work on Ray of Light, Orbit also collaborated with Madonna on her 2000 album Music and produced tracks for her 2012 release, MDNA. The London-born producer was a highly sought-after figure in the music industry, having worked with a diverse array of artists such as Britney Spears, Blur, Pink, U2, Robbie Williams, and All Saints. Madonna concluded her post by calling him "otherworldly" and "singular," expressing gratitude for the "magical time" they spent together and stating, "I was so lucky to have known you and fallen down the rabbit hole with you."
