Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has described his recent meeting with US President Donald Trump as “fruitful,” declaring that the time has come to permanently end the war. The remarks were shared by the Lebanese Presidency on Friday during a meeting between Aoun, EU Ambassador Sandra De Waele, and a delegation of various ambassadors and charges d’affaires.
During the discussion, Aoun reaffirmed Lebanon’s commitment to ongoing reform efforts, noting that the country remains dedicated to achieving its goals despite the active conflict. Regarding regional security, the president stated that the continued presence of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) remains the preferred option for the upcoming phase. He further noted that if maintaining the current mission proves impossible, an alternative force should be established to replace it. Aoun also urged the European Union to support the implementation of a “framework formula,” asserting that Lebanon’s stability is essential for the broader stability of the entire region.
In response, Ambassador De Waele remarked that Lebanon is currently at a crossroads and entering a new chapter, confirming that the European Union supports the nation’s pursuit of security, stability, and reform.
The situation on the ground remains critical. According to data from the Lebanese health ministry, Israel’s offensive, which began on March 2, 2026, has resulted in 4,329 deaths and 12,233 injuries. Despite existing agreements, Israeli forces continue to occupy parts of southern Lebanon. These areas include territories held for decades as well as locations seized during the 2023-2024 confrontations, with forces advancing more than 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) into Lebanese territory during the current offensive.
