Jackie the Bald Eagle Shows Improvement in Intensive Care

Jackie, the renowned bald eagle of Big Bear Lake in Southern California, is currently receiving around-the-clock intensive care as veterinarians work to determine the cause of a mysterious illness. As of Monday, July 27, the Ojai Raptor Center reported that the eagle remains in stable but critical condition. While Jackie was initially admitted to the facility following a territorial encounter with two subadult eagles, medical professionals suspect an underlying health issue is the primary cause of her condition.

The recovery process has been fluctuating. On July 20, Jackie received a life-saving blood transfusion from another eagle, which initially led to what the center described as encouraging improvement. However, a setback occurred on Saturday when her blood values declined. Since that time, she has stabilized once more. Caregivers note that she is currently eating on her own, and there has been a significant increase in her energy, alertness, and feistiness during feeding sessions.

A critical metric for her recovery is the packed cell volume, which represents the percentage of red blood cells in her bloodstream. This figure rose from 8% before the weekend to 16% by Monday. Although this remains below the normal range, the center views the trend as a positive sign and continues to monitor her bloodwork daily. The Ojai Raptor Center has released video documentation showing various aspects of her treatment, including her time in an oxygen chamber, diagnostic exams, anesthesia for testing, and the blood transfusion procedure.

Extensive diagnostic testing has ruled out several common threats, including lead poisoning, cancer, and the presence of foreign metals like fishing hooks. While the team is administering treatment for potential rodenticide poisoning, they do not believe it is the definitive cause of her illness. Jackie is also receiving prophylactic treatments designed to support her body during this recovery period. The center acknowledged that the case is complex and they have yet to reach a definitive diagnosis, noting that recovery for wild animals is rarely linear.

Jackie has achieved international fame through a livestreamed camera that has documented her life in the nest since 2015, capturing her experiences with raising eaglets, defending her territory, and surviving harsh weather. Her followers remain deeply concerned as she continues her fight for recovery, with many expressing hope that she will return to her home in the wild.

"Despite extensive diagnostic testing and consultation with experienced wildlife veterinarians, we still do not have a definitive diagnosis," the raptor center said. "Cases like this can be incredibly complex, and we will continue adjusting her treatment as new information becomes available."

Jackie's fans have never worried more about her fate. Their fears grow every day she remains in critical condition.
