Significant plumes of smoke originating from hundreds of Canadian wildfires have drifted south, settling over regions spanning from the Great Lakes to the Northeast as of July 15. The presence of these fires, which includes numerous active blazes in northern Minnesota along the Canadian border, has resulted in yellow and brown skies, creating hazardous conditions for those in the path of the haze.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, wildfire smoke is distinct from other air pollution sources because it can travel vast distances and persist in the environment for extended periods. The Environmental Protection Agency notes that this smoke is composed of noxious gases and microscopic particulate matter. These fine particles are often much smaller than the width of a human hair, allowing them to be inhaled deep into the lungs, which can cause respiratory irritation, shortness of breath, and exacerbate existing conditions like asthma and heart disease.
The toxicity of the smoke can increase the longer it remains in the atmosphere. Through a process known as oxidation, particles interact with trace radicals—molecules with unpaired electrons—to form free radicals. These substances are capable of damaging human cells and tissues. Furthermore, the New York State Department of Health warns that the specific chemical makeup of the smoke depends on what is burning, whether it be grasslands, trees, vegetation, or buildings. This can introduce a variety of toxic substances into the air, including carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, acid gases, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, benzene, toluene, styrene, various metals, and dioxins.
Beyond direct irritation, the smoke can interfere with the body's immune response. It may hamper the function of macrophages, which are specialized white blood cells responsible for protecting the lungs. As the smoke continues to impact air quality, public health officials emphasize that these environmental conditions pose serious risks to those exposed to the drifting haze.
