Tedde Moore, the Canadian-born actress widely recognized for her role as Miss Shields in the beloved 1983 holiday classic A Christmas Story, has died at the age of 79. According to a statement shared on her Facebook page, Moore passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 5. While no specific cause of death was disclosed, the tribute noted that she died under sunny skies overlooking Fairy Lake in her home of Huntsville, Muskoka, Ontario, surrounded by her family both physically and spiritually.
The announcement praised Moore’s enduring influence, stating, "Forever the teacher, she had a quote for every occasion and a special way of touching the lives and hearts of everyone she met." The tribute further highlighted how she took those around her under her "generous and welcoming wings."
Before her career on the silver screen, Moore established a strong foundation in the arts. She was the daughter of actor Mavor Moore and the granddaughter of the Canadian theater icon Dora Mavor Moore. She studied at London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating in 1967 with the Principal's Medal of Honor. Her film debut came four years later in the 1971 Donald Shebib drama Rip-Off, in which she played the character Nancy. Over the following years, she appeared in various television and film projects, including Police Surgeon, Second Wind, Murder by Decree, The Littlest Hobo, and The Amateur.
Moore is best remembered for her portrayal of the pragmatic schoolteacher Miss Shields in A Christmas Story, a film directed by Bob Clark that is set in the 1940s. In the film, Moore’s character famously warns the protagonist, Ralphie Parker, played by Peter Billingsley, that he might "shoot your eye out" with the BB gun he desperately desires. The movie, which grossed $19.2 million at the box office, became a perennial holiday staple and was inducted into the Library of Congress's National Film Registry in 2012. Moore notably reprised her role as Miss Shields in the 1994 sequel, My Summer Story, marking the only time a cast member from the original film returned.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Moore maintained a steady career with appearances in Friday the 13th: The Series, The Deliverance of Elaine, Focus, and Rolie Polie Olie. In 2011, she held a recurring role in the political drama The Kennedys. Her final acting credit was an appearance in the 2017 Hallmark Christmas film Magical Christmas Ornaments.
