The Kansas City Current, an NWSL team co-owned by Brittany Mahomes, Patrick Mahomes, Angie Long, and Chris Long, is set to play a significant role in the fourth season of the popular Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso. The upcoming season centers on Ted Lasso’s return to coach a new women's soccer team for AFC Richmond, leading to a partnership between the show and the Kansas City Current.
Reflecting on the collaboration, Angie Long stated in an August 5 interview with ESPN that the show serves as a proof of concept and a major endorsement for women's soccer. Since its premiere in August 2020, Ted Lasso has achieved significant critical acclaim, earning 11 Primetime Emmy Awards from 61 nominations, including consecutive wins for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2021 and 2022.
The club has also expanded its off-field operations, recently opening the KC Current Studios at Current Landing on August 3. During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Brittany Mahomes highlighted the broader impact of sports, noting that the confidence, friendships, and inspiration fostered by athletics are essential stories that deserve to be shared. Brittany has been involved with the organization since its inception, having been granted an expansion team by the NWSL in December 2020 alongside the Longs. Patrick Mahomes joined the ownership group in January 2023, becoming the first active NFL player to hold an ownership stake in an NWSL team.
Before her tenure as an owner, Brittany Mahomes was a forward for the University of Texas at Tyler from 2013 to 2016, and she was inducted into the school's Athletics Hall of Fame in early 2026. Today, the Kansas City Current stands as one of the most prominent teams in women's soccer, with Forbes valuing the club at approximately $325 million, making it the second-most valuable team in the NWSL.
