Two tourists were injured during a knife attack on Tuesday morning in the vicinity of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. The incident occurred near the entrance of the Acropolis Museum, located at the base of the historic hill that serves as one of the country's most prominent tourist attractions.
According to police reports, the victims were a man and a woman, both of whom are Greek Americans. The woman sustained minor injuries to her leg, while the man suffered more severe wounds to his arm. Both individuals were transported to a hospital by ambulance for treatment.
Authorities confirmed that the assailant was detained shortly after the attack. While the individual's identity has not been formally released, police noted that he appeared to be struggling with psychological issues. Such violent incidents are considered rare in Greece.
The Acropolis hill, which houses the 2,500-year-old Parthenon temple along with various other significant monuments, is a major global destination. The site saw approximately 4.6 million visitors last year.
