The United States military has conducted a fresh series of strikes against Iran, marking the 10th consecutive night of offensive operations in the region. According to US officials, the strikes are intended to "further degrade" Iran’s capacity to threaten shipping lanes within the Strait of Hormuz. This escalation follows a public commitment from US President Donald Trump to hold Iran accountable for the recent deaths of three American soldiers, two of whom were killed in Jordan and one in Iraq.
President Trump stated that Iran was hit "very hard" the previous night as a measure of honor for the fallen service members. The Department of Defense confirmed the identities of two of the deceased as 19-year-old Private Isabella Gonzales from Texas and 25-year-old Lieutenant Tyler James Feehan from Hawaii, both of whom died during an Iranian strike on the Muwaffaq Salti base in Jordan over the weekend. Centcom reported that a third service member was initially missing in action following the attack, with unidentified remains subsequently recovered from the site.
Despite the intensifying military activity, Tehran has indicated that diplomatic communication channels remain open through intermediaries, even as a previously established ceasefire has collapsed. The situation remains volatile across the region; Jordan’s military reported shooting down three Iranian missiles on Monday night, while Kuwait’s armed forces intercepted Iranian drones. Additionally, Bahrain reported that Iranian-launched drones targeted its air navigation systems, though air traffic was not interrupted.
The impact on maritime traffic has also been significant. While Centcom maintains that commercial vessels continue to transit the Strait of Hormuz, the UK Maritime Trade Operations agency (UKMTO) received reports of a tanker being struck by an unknown projectile, forcing the crew to abandon the ship. Separately, Iranian state media agency IRNA claimed that two oil tankers were struck while attempting to traverse the strait and that rescue teams were working to remove the crews. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) alleged the tankers were using an "unsafe and hazardous southern route" when they exploded, a claim that Centcom has disputed. Iranian reports further indicated that several cities, including Tabriz, Chabahar, Konarak, Bandar Mahshahr, and Bandar Imam Khomeini, were targeted during the recent US strikes.
