One person has died following a shooting involving federal U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel in Biddeford, Maine. State House Speaker Ryan Fecteau confirmed that the incident took place on the morning of Monday, July 13, in the city located approximately 15 miles south of Portland. 1 person was confirmed dead by state officials.
Regarding the ongoing investigation, Fecteau stated that the Maine State Police and the Department of Public Safety are currently on the scene to gather details. He added that an investigation by the FBI is also expected. The Biddeford Police Department confirmed they are not leading the inquiry and directed further inquiries to federal authorities, noting that there is no current threat to the public.
U.S. Representative Chellie Pingree, D-Maine, addressed the incident on social media, expressing that she was deeply disturbed and angry by the reports. In a video statement, she noted that her office is working to determine the circumstances of the event and offered her sympathy to the individual, their family, and the Biddeford community.
ICE did not immediately provide a response to requests for comment. This incident occurs less than a week after an ICE agent in Houston, Texas, fatally shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. That event followed the shooting deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by federal officers in Minneapolis earlier this year, a sequence of events that has reignited scrutiny regarding federal agents.
