A tragic blaze at a pub in Bangkok, Thailand, has claimed the lives of at least 27 people, according to government officials and emergency responders. The incident, which occurred on Monday, is being described as one of the most lethal fire disasters in the popular tourism destination in recent years.

Anwut Pho-ampai, representing the Ruamkatanyu Foundation, which manages a voluntary emergency rescue service, confirmed the grim toll, stating that the number of fatalities had exceeded 27. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who arrived at the scene during the early hours of Monday, indicated that additional victims were currently being transported to local hospitals for treatment.

Reports suggest the fire broke out at the Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao pub, located in the city’s Chatuchak district. While the exact circumstances surrounding the start of the fire remain under investigation, the Prime Minister shared accounts from survivors who described the venue becoming rapidly overwhelmed by thick smoke. According to Anutin, many patrons attempted to flee toward the back of the establishment near the restrooms, only to discover there were no fire escapes available to facilitate an exit.

In addition to the fatalities, a spokesperson for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration reported that 63 individuals sustained injuries during the incident. Authorities are continuing to manage the aftermath of the blaze as investigation efforts into the cause proceed.
